In 1961, Friends Rehabilitation Program commissioned what has become one the most architecturally well-known buildings in the nation: Guild House. Designed by architect Robert Venturi, Guild House was finished in 1964. Though it is lauded as a masterpiece of postmodern design and listed on the Register of Historic Places, Guild House was designed with the Quaker value of simplicity of mind. And its that very simplicity — its use of familiar materials and forms and its modest decoration — that is the hallmark of postmodernism.
